Some history of the Claremont Real Estate Market
It is said that the Nyungar Aboriginal peoples knew Claremont as a place of plentiful spring water, good fishing and abundant waterfowl. But it wasn’t until 1830 that settler, John Butler, set up an inn in Freshwater Bay – in modern-day Peppermint Grove – in order to attract travellers on the road from Perth to Fremantle. A wetland became known as Butler’s Swamp (later Lake Claremont) after which convicts arrived to the colony from 1850 onwards, helping construct Fremantle Road along the way.
A state school was then built in 1862 and a church shortly after that, with a community growing around what is now Victoria Avenue. The Christ Church Grammar School was also built post-1870s. In 1881, the railway line from Perth to Fremantle was built, along with a station at Butler’s Swamp, with the name of the station changed to Claremont in 1883. From these humble beginnings, Claremont quickly established itself into one of the most well-recognised suburbs of Perth, whilst maintaining its unique village atmosphere.
Claremont is a great place to call home
Although a large part of Claremont is residential, it is home to a world-class shopping precinct in the “Claremont Quarter” – headlined by quality fashion retailers and trendy eateries in and around the shopping centre. The Claremont Showground famously host the Perth Royal Show every September/October school holidays, as well as other events and exhibitions. The Claremont Train Station is the suburb’s main public-transport hub, with Freshwater Bay Primary School, Christ Church Grammar School, the Freshwater Bay Museum, Methodist Ladies’ College and the Bethesda Hospital some of its other major amenities.
Claremont features some grand homes close to the Swan River on the southern side of Stirling Highway, close to the Claremont Yacht Club and the local fisherman’s jetty. To the suburb’s north, the Lake Claremont Golf Club and the Claremont Aquatic Centre back on to picturesque Lake Claremont. Claremont is easily accessible to both the city and coast, as well as Fremantle, due to Stirling Highway running directly through the centre of the suburb.
Why you should live in Claremont
Claremont’s aforementioned proximity to beaches, the Perth CBD and the historic port town of Fremantle is a major factor in attracting people to live in one of the State’s oldest and most exclusive suburbs. Top local schools attract families to the area, while the stunning Claremont Quarter shopping hub speaks for itself.
A unique village lifestyle is also a drawcard, with almost everything in Claremont virtually walking distance away from your front doorstep. From lakeside to riverfront, there is just so much for you to look forward to, here.
